Showcase

Here is an example of the multi-color range when there was more oxygen under the tub. I love this piece but naturally, the student preferred it to have been all black. The element of surprise is what makes the pit firing so unique.

Detail view

The students seemed very satisfied with their pieces. A few pieces actually looked much nicer after they turned black.

The students had to rinse and dry off the pots. They have a ash, fireplace smell which will not linger for very long.

  1. Pam, the pots look amazing! I love their choice of designs that were etched into the surface. My favorite one has the polar or spirit bears on it. Will they be displayed in the school gallery? Amazing art created by fortunate students that have talented art teachers!

  2. I am hardpressed to pick a favorite. I thought I liked the reddish cast until I saw the blackened pots. The black really does highlight the designs and shapes. Each student's choice was very unique. If they were available in LV, I would purchase from the students . . . yet I imagine they would be reluctant to part with their creations.

  3. The pots are as unique as the students. I am sure that they very proud of their work. And it is true, they are fortunate to be able to take an art course which enables them to find a showcase for their talent. Our art class was cut at our school. It is a real misfortune.

  4. Is this the only pottery class your kids can take? I think after this experience, they'd want to take more (as a class or a extra curricular club).

  5. Jill,
Thank you for your compliments. Yes, they are on display now. We have a couple of display cases in the front of the school and one down by my Ceramics room.

  6. Sue,
I will have to tell the students you said you would purchase some if they were in your area. That will give them an ego boost! Some would sell and some would want to keep. You would be surprised what goes in my trash can....or tries to. I tell them I will subtract points from their grade if they throw it away in my room.

  7. Faith,
That is a shame that your art class was cut. The students are the ones to be hurt with that. Maybe when the economy recovers they will get it back. ??

  8. Twila,
The students have the opportunity to take six different levels of Ceramics. I have had some students their entire high school years which is fun.

  9. All of the pots turned out great! It's amazing how the colors could be so different based on the amount of oxygen that is present during the process. I do think the all black color looks nicer, and my favorite one is the 4th image.

  12. What great pieces of pottery. I know the students must be proud of their work. It is truly such a process but the final product is well worth it. I could not find a favorite. So many different shapes, markings colors.
